[Korea] Korean Valentin’s day - part1
There are plenty of interesting ‘days’ in Korea. Many of them are closely related to celebrating their own relation ship of lovers, but some says it is too commercial and we have to be aware of it. Let us see what Koreans celebrate through an year including St. Valentine’s day.
Diary (다이어리) in Korean means small schedule book something like Franklin Planner. In the beginning of the year lovers give schedule book or organizer each other as a present.
Jjimjil-bang (찜질방) is Korean dry sauna. We dial 119 instead of 911 in Korea to call fire fighter. So the number 119 connote something very hot.
St Valentine’s day exists in Korea as well. One difference of St Valentine’s day in Korea is that girls give chocolates to boys this day, and they wait a month for boy’s return candies.
Number 23 is definitely, twenty three but one may read two numbers separately as two and three. <Two> in Korean reads [e] (이) while <Three> reads [sam] (삼). So, if one reads 23 as two-three, it sounds like [e-sam] (이-삼). This sounds very close to [in-sam] (인삼), which is the pronunciation of jinseng in Korean.
Samgyeopsal means pork belly. However, if we play on words, samgyeopsal can be understood as double threes by breaking that word in three syllables: sam(3)-gyeop(overlap)-sal(meat).
The same plying on words. 3-7 (sam-chil) sounds like chiam-chi. Cham-chi means tuna in Korean. Therefore, March 7th is a day people consume tuna(Chan-chi)....
A month of wait ends and girls are paid for their chocolate as sweet candies.
